The Nivriti Experience
Nivriti is located in the idyllic Velliyad village, just along the famed Bharathappuzha River (a walkable distance of 300 metres). A few kilometres from Ottapalam in Kerala’s Palakkad district, Nivriti is set on two acres of coconut palms and several trees, facing a stunning vista of paddy fields. The property was built in 1938 and comprises an aristocratic Tharavadu—consisting of a Tharavadu Veedu or main house complex, the former residence of the family members, and a Pathayappura or granary house used for grain storage — now transformed into two heritage residences.
The residences are a tribute to classic 1930s Keralan architecture, with carved wood doors and ceilings and a pagoda-like tiled roof resting on wooden rafters, meant to keep the interiors cool even in summer. A small garden nearby adds to the visual extravaganza, as does a lovely pond ideal for watching sunsets and long conversations. The property is dense with towering coconut palms and fruit-bearing trees such as jackfruit, gooseberry, custard apple, guava, and a variety of mango trees. Lush green banana plantations and vegetable farming areas presently flank the dwellings. The climate on the property is salubrious (annual temperatures span 20-30°C with interspersed monsoon showers) thanks to its proximity to the rice paddies and the river, ensuring a comfortable living experience all year. Several attractions are just a car ride away, both in the vicinity and the district.
